The poetry collection Soda caustica (Caustic Soda) (2014) by DimitriRuggeri Di Nella can be considered the first and only collectionon of poetries into Italian (not into dialect) dedicated to the disastrous 1915’s earthquake that struck Avezzano and the other centers of Marsica in Abruzzo.
The publication means to commemorate the imminent centenary of the 1915 earthquake. We publish here one of the poems.
The hammer whirled to the ground,
with the cat,
and some good Christian.
(Everything pierced by the same nail)
The glasses, placed in the dinette, fell in sequence,
died stiff in that infernal dance hall,
like bowling ninepins after an unexpected strike.
The sick men, the old ones, the ants and the cicadas fell.
Even the rustic dervishes’ coffins collapsed,
at least they were lucky to have been already buried!
